The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York) is the service
organization for the nation's largest, most artistically influential, and
most culturally diverse theatre community: Off Broadway. Founded in 1972,
A.R.T./New York currently serves close to 400 not-for-profit theatres and
related organizations. Our members serve over 6 million theatregoers annually,
constitute the single largest source of new work entering the American repertory,
and have produced 15 winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
A.R.T./New York is:
A provider of low-cost office space; through our newest initiative,
South Oxford Space,
a five story office building we recently purchased in Brooklyn, New York,
which houses 20 small theatre companies. The companies pay a
subsidized rent of $12/sq.ft. and have access to a variety of shared amenities
such as copy and fax machines, kitchen facilities and gallery space. The building
will house three rehearsal studios, which will also be available at below market rates.
A provider of management-related technical assistance, through the
Nancy Quinn Fund,
which served more than 400 artists from close to 115 emerging theatres during the
1999-2000 season; the Theatre Leadership Institute, which provides long-term management
consultancies to 29 small and mid-size theatres; and the Roundtables program, which
offers close to 50 workshops and professional development opportunities for companies
of all sizes throughout the season.
A grantmaker to small and emerging theatres, through
The Fund for Small Theatres
and the
Nancy Quinn Fund, to date those two programs have
made grants totalling almost $500,000.
The nation's only theatre-specific source of capital financing, through the Elizabeth
Steinway Chapin Real Estate Loan Fund, which has invested more than $1.8 million in
Off Broadway's infrastructure through loans and grants.
A producer of audience development initiatives, including:
Off Broadway Online (http://www.offbroadwayonline.com/), a
new Internet portal site that will centralize information about Off Broadway companies
onto one easy-to-use website.
An advocate for the arts at the state and local levels; a source of research and
analysis on the Off Broadway industry; and a provider of cash-flow loans, low-cost
liability insurance, and other money-saving services.
